About this event

Landlord's Self-Help Centre is pleased to present the 2020 Annual General Meeting of Members and Landlord Learning Forum on October 22, 2020. This is an exclusive members-only event that will be delivered online and feature presentations experts in Residential Tenancy Law in addition to the AGM.

  • Early Bird Learning: The New Way to Recover Monies Post-Tenancy - Toronto lawyer and Deputy Small Claims Court Judge, Jane Ferguson, kicks off the event with her early bird presentation. Jane will explain amendments under Bill 184 that will allow landlords to file an application with the Landlord and Tenant Board to recover monies owed by a former tenant up to one year after the tenant vacates, rather than filing with Small Claims Court. These new provisions have not yet been proclaimed into force.
  • AGM Business Meeting - LSHC's President, Treasurer and Clinic Director provide reports on LSHC's objectives, initiatives, and how we have navigated these unprecedented times and the challenges we have faced over the last year. The Treasurer will present the Financial Statements dated March 31, 2020 and provide an update on LSHC's funding situation.
  • Address from Minister Steve Clark, Municipal Affairs and Housing
  • Educational Presentation: Bill 184 - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - Lawyer and former LTB Adjudicator, Petar Guzina, will provide a comprehensive overview of Bill 184 amendments and explain how these changes will impact small landlords and their operations both positively and negatively. From consent orders to enhanced bad faith penalties, Petar Guzina will help you understand the recent changes to regulatory environment.

Landlord's Self-Help Centre is a non-profit specialty clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario operating with a province-wide mandate to provide information and support services to the small landlord community on a non-profit basis and educate the community in landlord and tenant relations.

This is achieved through the delivery of services which include general information, referral and summary advice; providing educational programs, learning tools and material through our website (www.landlordselfhelp.com); and representing the interests of the small landlord community in law reform activities aimed at improving the regulatory environment governing residential tenancies in Ontario.

Landlord's Self-Help Centre is governed by a ten-member volunteer Board of Directors who reflect the community served and have taken an interest in the work of LSHC. The Board is comprised of members of the community and professionals who bring skills and experience to support the governance of the organization. The Centre operates with five full-time employees and assists approximately more than 16,000 clients each year.
